Did you know you can go to the VFW even if you're not a member? You can! We had a retirement party there last night, and the whole staff was so helpful and accommodating. Everyone had a great time because the fast service. My food was very good and super reasonable.
I've never eaten at a veteran mess hall before, but the food service is open to the public and my dad and I decided to check it out for dinner one day as it was close to our hotel. This place was actually pretty cool and we had a great time, especially aided by the fact that a band was playing and the atmosphere was very lively. The burgers themselves are pretty OK/good. We each had the swiss burger and the buns were lightly toasted, the mushrooms and tasty and the burger patty itself was OK (a tad overcooked, but decent). All in all, it needed a little ketchup, but was tasty. We also got a choice of tots, fries or slaw with the burger, which is nice to see (and no upcharges for either choice). All in all, for under $20, we had a nice evening meal and got to enjoy a live band. The crowd is older, but the place is lively and efficient on the right nights. Don't be intimidated -- you may need to seat yourself once you walk in, we were a little confused when we walked in, but as we sat down someone took our order and things were smooth from there on it. TLDR; not fancy, older veteran mess hall with dirt cheap prices, a bar and sometimes live music.
Staff always seem happy to be there and welcoming even to out of towers like my wife and I. Regulars are friendly and entertaining: ). Food is always solid. We visit when we're in town for med checkups, and somehow, we always end up here for at least one dinner during our trip. 'I can't believe I want to go to a VFW for dinner' is a comment I always seem to make when we're in town. Not that Rochester is flush with fine dining, but there are a good number of other choices. If you're in town and want a solid bar and grill, go there.
